Mealtime has undergone a dramatic shift in the last few decades. A 30% increase in the number of women in the workforce over the last 40 years has changed the dynamics of the home, and by extension, the way families eat. Today, nearly half the labour force in Canada are women, and nearly one-third of women working report that they work part time to care for their children. The result? More on the go meals, portable snacks, and meal prep kits. Working parents trying to juggle household responsibilities, parenting and employment find that dinner time looks nothing like it did during their parents or grandparents’ generation.
In addition to the logistical changes of meals (when and where people eat), today’s parents are more aware than ever about the nutritional value of what they serve their families.
